The Beatles had an amazing affect on music. A lot of kids in my school know who the Beatles are. My best friend loves them and their music. They helped start Rock 'n' Roll! I LOVE THEM!!!!

The Beatles started as the Quarrymen playing at a small club called The Cavern. Although they had a small following, they were not doing very well. They went to Holland and Germany and became the Silver Beatles (5 of them in those days. In the early '60s, they returned to Britain as a quartet and with a new drummer named Richard STARKY (Ringo). There was alot of controversy about Ringo. with many former fans complaining about the loss of BEST. Anyway, the early Beatles dressed neatly and in a semi formal manner, with neat hair and clean shaven looks. Although their clothes and hairstyles were 'hip', the older generation found it hard to criticize them. They took on Brian EPSTEIN as manager and George MARTIN. Through a mixture of style, clear and understandable singing and EPSTEIN's uncanny 'knowing' of when to move them from country to country (stopped the public getting bored of them), the Beatles became the hit that they were. Although from Liverpool (northern England) London (Carnaby Street) became their 'home'. Liverpool and London are world's apart in culture, accent and customs. Tghe Beatles were awarded an O.B.E. (Order of the British Empire an award slightly below knighthood) for services to Britain in Tourism (not music or entertainment). This was because tourism to London and Liverpool were greatly increased with people wanting to experience 'Beatlemania'. The youth of the time dressed like the Beatles, walked and talked like them, copied hairstyles. Images of the Beatles could be found on breakfast cereal boxes often with a Beatles novelty inside. Crockery could be bought with their images (I had a Beatles breakfast bowl in the early '60s and became the 'coolest' kid in school). Although they only lasted about a decade (the Stones are still going somehow), now other band had such an effect of the British youth of the time. The U.S.A. was also heavily affected possibly due to the loss of some of its own 'super stars' (Buddy HOLLY, J.P. RICHARDSON, A.K.A. The Big Bopper and Ritchie VALENS) The song Bye Bye Miss American Pie is apparently a reference to this loss and the 'British Invasion". Elvis Presley stated in an interview that the Beatles suddenly began to take over the American music scene. PRESLEY further stated that because he was making '..silly movies..' and there was no one else (big) around, the Beatles and later other British groups set American music back to an untold extent. More distant parts of my family had a passing acquaintance with some of the Beatles and with EPSTEIN. A family member was managing the Searchers (contemporary band) for a time. I look back on their music now and realise that (as with many things) their music appeals to me because it was part of my youth. To my mind, once they left the 'clean cut' route, their music lost something. I believe that the late '60's were the beginning of the end for the Beatles. Others will disagree.

What was the craze for beatles?

It was called Beatlemania; the Beatles became very popular just as there was a very high proportion of young people (the baby-boomer generation, born shortly after World War II) - so it's unlikely that any other band will reach their heights of popularity.

Who was The Beatles popular with?

One of the unusual features of the Beatles is they had a very wide appeal; teenage girls would scream, teenage boys would admire. The Beatles rise to fame was when the baby-boomer generation (people born shortly after WW2 finished) were becoming teenagers - almost half the UK population were under 20, so they had a huge audience. As well as young people, songs such as Yesterday or When I'm 64 appealed to older people.
