Anything you make it play. Most people will tell you classical but there's this band called apocalypitca who use cellos and violin/violas and they have some pretty heavy songs.

The cello, like any other instrument is capable, within the hands of a skilled player, of playing any genre of music.

It is a good expression. The Violoncello is not playing nor performing without one, like an instrumentalist, performer, and/or Violoncellist performing the Violoncello to help to cause Violoncello music. One may mostly identify music appearing to emanate from and/or with a Violoncello to be Classical Music. There are example of non-classical music. Classical may be the music of Ludwig van Beethoven and the appearances of cohorts.

Interestingly to a number of people the number one selling song includes Violoncello designation. The song is more a Rock 'N' Roll Ballad.
