it really depends on ur personality

i currently play the flute its my 4th year and im pretty good

if you love noise and loud things go for the drums

if you love mysterious things go for the Saxophone

if you are young and want to have an easy and fun instrument similar to the saxophone go for the Clarinet

if you do not like to learn too much but keep it simple go for the bells

if you like anthems and loud noises go for the Trumpet

That really depends on a lot of factors, as we don't know you, it makes it quite difficult for us to answer your anonymous question.

However, if you are currently thinking about joining the school band and considering which instrument to take up, here's a breakdown of common school band instruments:

1) The Flute

A woodwind instrument

This is the instrument I played. The flute is very difficult at first, as you have to blow into it in a very specific way and hold the keys in a very particular way that takes a lot of effort to learn, but the flute gets easier once you master this and the first few notes. Another difficult is the notes in the higher register can be difficult. However, the flute is a very beautiful sounding instrument, and is a lot of fun.

2) The Clarinet

A reed instrument

Similar to the flute in terms of how you play it, and like the flute, it takes some mastery in the beginning to be able to play it without make the "squealing" or "squeaking" sounds in higher registers, but I've heard the clarinet is opposite to the flute, it starts out easier, then gets more difficult as you learn more difficult notes. I personally didn't like the sound of the clarinet. The flute plays in the higher register, an the clarinet can play somewhat lower notes.

3) The saxophone

Brass instrument

A lot of people are attracted to this instrument as it has the association with Jazz Music, which has the reputation of being more modern, more spontaneous and flavorful than classical. However, in school band you might play all kinds of music no matter what instrument you play. The saxophone's keys are very similar to the flute, so it's very common that if you play either one, you can easily pick up both. You have the choice between the alto sax and the soprano sax. The first kind is a lot smaller, thus easier to carry and hold as you play.

4) The Violin

A string instrument

A difficult instrument, particularly in the beginning stages. Being able to play on key is a struggle, and it takes a lot of dedication. Like the guitar, the violin will callous your fingers, and might make them bleed at first before they callous over. Not all school bands include violins, so it may not be an option.

5) The trumpet

A brass instrument

An easier instrument to begin with, the trumpet is very loud and has three keys. The difficulty in the trumpet is inflection: learning how to blow into it properly, because it's with your lips that you'll make the different notes. That's the challenge of the trumpet. Also, learning to play more quietly is difficult. The trumpet takes a lot of lung power!

6) The tuba

Brass instrument

A very, very large and low instrument! Not all bands include the tuba. It's challenging due to its size, and you blow into it the same way you blow into a trumpet. So playing one or the other might mean you can play both (as well as the French horn, which I'll discuss next). The tuba rarely gets a "star" role as it tends to be in the bass register.

7) The French Horn

A brass instrument

A beautiful instrument, similar to the trumpet in how you blow into it, and in how its structure (with the keys), however, it register can sometimes approach that of flute. French horns are more likely to have "star roles" in songs. Not all school bands include french horns.

8) The Drums

Percussive instrument

The drums are much easier to pick up than most instruments, as you don't need to learn how to blow into anything properly or hold down any strings... There's not any notes to memorize, either. The challenge in the drums is learning rhythm and being able to keep up two separate rhythms with both hands. Also, being able to keep up the same rhythm for long periods of time.

10) The piano

Percussive instrument

A very popular and flexible instrument, with the piano can play all three octaves, very low to very high, it's easy to play very loudly or very quietly, sound very mournful or very upbeat. Like the drums, you don't have to hold any strings or blow into any mouthpieces, but, unlike the drums, and like the other instruments, you must learn how to read notes on music. It's challenging to learn the chords and to keep up the rhythm, especially two at once. Some school bands don't have pianos, but many schools have piano courses.

11) The cello

String instrument

Similar in appearance to the violin, the cello is a very large instrument that plays in the low register. It often takes up the bass line in musical pieces. It has a very delicate and sometimes somber or subtle tone. Like the violin, you will develop calluses from playing chords on the strings. Some bands don't include cellos.

11) The piccolo

Woodwind instrument

An advanced instrument that is practically a smaller kind of flute. Many school bands, if you're a beginner, might not let you play this as most people start wiht the flute first. The piccolo is very difficult, as it plays notes in the EXTREMELY high register, and learning flute first creates a nice basis for the piccolo.

Guitar

Alright. So the guitar isn't so different from the above instruments as you might think. Like violin and piano, you're going to have to learn chords. And like the violin, you'll get calluses from playing the strings. It's difficult to learn chords, but after you learn just a few simple ones you can easily learn simple songs, even some pop songs. It takes a lot of dedication to learn more difficult songs, however.

Bass

The chords for bass are a lot simpler than for guitar, but if you have small hands, it can be VERY difficult, maybe even next to impossible because bass is built with the strings are wider apart. Many musicians start with the bass and then learn the guitar. It builds a very strong foundation for learning the guitar, as the chords are simpler. Many of the melodies are also simpler and more repetitive.

There are many instruments to choose from. More than those listed here. These are some of the basic options. There are many things to consider when choosing an instrument: what kind of music do you want to play, what kind of instruments do you like? Listen to different instruments, which ones inspire you? I was inspired the moment I heard someone play a flute. Cost is another factor. Many of these instruments are very expensive. If you know someone who ones an instrument they could lend to you, give to you, or sell you for cheap, that could be a good starting place. Remember, for all of these instruments, you will have to learn to read music. Learning an instrument takes time and commitment. You can learn more about how it breaks down differently for each instrument by asking musicians, going on online communities for instruments, or stopping by your local music store.
