The Arabic word "nasheed" (نشيد) means "hymn" or "anthem".

However, as an Islamic term, a nasheed has a specific meaning. It refers to a song about morality and Islam that is performed exclusively with vocals or with minimal uses of instruments. The failure to use Musical Instruments tracks to some hadiths which condemn the use of musical instruments. Nasheeds are generally a form of Islamic musical art that is found among all of the faithful, but have become more ubiquitous as Islamic State films have decided to use nasheeds as part of their media outreach.
