What a question! Your tone depends on so many things! The guitar's timber and other materials have a huge effect on the tone, as well as strings, pickups and so on. Try experimenting with different kinds of strings, as some sound more 'bright'and some 'mellow'. Even the material of the nut (the thing at the end of the neck near the tuners with holes for the strings) can influence tone.

The amp is also a huge factor in tone. It is up to you whether you select a valve or solid-state amp. Valve amps are usually known for warmer tone, whereas solid state amps usually have a harsher, more bitey tone. Valves aren't cheap these days though, so most players choose solid state simply for value for money.

Even picks can affect your tone, and some even say that your fingers produce a certain tone! Start experimenting with different things such as strings and picks, and if you can afford it, pickups. If you really have money to burn, shop around for an amp that suits your tastes.

Solid state amps sound like a fly in a paper bag.!!! But for the money value, yes they are more to the consumer on a tight budget. Tube amps are the prefered choice of professionals and players of many years, they fill the room or concert hall with a rich, warm sound, excellent feed-back yet unchallenged clean sound. You at some time will determine your own sound or type of amp that's fits your sound alone.

Guitars, doesn't matter if your jimi Hendrix or Elvis Presley, a million dollar guitar or a k-mart guitar your gonna sound the same, it's your style. as said before types of wood and weight and strings as well as pick-ups active or non will make different tones from your hands on the neck. you should spend some time in as many music stores trying as many types of guitars and strings and amps, don't let the guy next to you playing think that the sound he is playing is the best, you either like deep tones or high-pitched or somewhere in between.

EVERYTHING in a guitar rig can change the sound of a guitar.

If you have a good guitar, but a bad amp, the guitar isn't going to sound any better than a bad guitar with a good amp. A bad guitar with any setup won't sound the way you want it too. You can change whatever you can to the settings that sound kinda like what you want, but it won't be the same as a good guitar. But a great guitar sound can be distroyed by bypassing pedals a lot of the time. Pedals can also change the sound, by distorting the signal as it goes through. If you are going to use pedals, use them all the time, or get a modeling pedal rig. With the modeling, you can create the sound you want, and then if needed, change it on the amp. A great amp and a great guitar is definitely the way to go, but if you can't, I say go with a modeling pedal because you can change the sound before it hits the amp.
