Schooling in South Africa depends on where you are and what you can afford. Public schools which are currently using the "Outcomes Based Education" system is pretty much a waste of time and will most definitely not provide a sound education. If you want your child to have a good education your only options now, if you can afford it is to utilize home schooling on the Cambridge or Australian school curriculums or use private schools that more often than not employ the same curriculums.
For tertiary education there is a wide variety of both public and private tertiary institutions of which most have a very high standard. There is always a bad apple here and there amongst the private sector institutions but amongst the public ones this is almost never a problem.
South Africa's National Qualifications Framework (NQF) recognises three broad bands of education: General Education and Training, Further Education and Training, and Higher Education and Training.
School life spans 13 years or grades, from grade 0, otherwise known as grade R or "reception year", through to grade 12 or "matric" - the year of matriculation. General Education and Training runs from grade 0 to grade 9. Under the South African Schools Act of 1996, education is compulsory for all South Africans from age 7 (grade 1) to age 15, or the completion of grade 9. General Education and Training also includes Adult Basic Education and Training.
