From Dictionary.com:

"Origin: 1175-1225; ME male (n.) < OF malle< Gmc; cf. OHG mal(a)ha satchel, bag"

basically it is saying that mal(a)ha (satchel or bag) was shortened and worded differently through the ages, but similar to the word male. It possibly originates from the French word "malle" (trunk). The mail was delivered by a stage coach which was called 'la malle-poste" because of the big trunk fixed at the back of the stage coach and which contained the mail.
