The most traditional music in present-day Jewish services is exclusively vocal.
With the single exception of the shofar, instruments have not been part of the
service since Temple times.

The music itself is almost entirely rooted in the musical idioms of the lands in which
the Jews have been dispersed during the past several centuries. Among Ashkenazim,
it's the music of Russia and eastern Europe. Among Sephardim and Yemenite Jews, it's
the music of Western Europe, North Africa, and the Arab countries.

My heritage is Russian and Polish. While I was a guest in a Sephardic Jewish home
in Caracas, Venezuela, during a business trip in the early 1980s, the lady of the
family stunned me with a summary that has stayed with me since then. She said:
"To you, we sound like Arabs. To us, you sound like Grand Opera."
