Neurotransmitters are chemicals released from nerve cells that play an important role in nerve cell communication.
mental illness, she also played a major role in founding 32 mental hospitals
These are both neurotransmitters that bind to neurons and have mood elevation and mood depressing functions.
What role do neurotransmitters play in psychological functioning
It is impossible to know if a mental illness will be passed down from parents to their children. Research has been conducted which suggests that there are biological links to mental illness, but the research also suggests that the environment plays a big role in the development of the illness, whether or not they have a biological disposition.
This is more or less theoretical question. Identical twins getting separated at birth, then one or both should have some some sort of mental illness. You happen to see both of them. But then you can know the role of genes in development of mental disorder in some particular disorder. The role of environmental factors are almost nullified in that case.
Dopamine plays an important role in schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease. Neurotransmitters are endogenous chemicals that send signals to nerve cells.
See the link below to the WikiPedia article on Pedophilia. There are some stdies that indicate a neurological cause, but it is not substantiated.
No. Calcium plays a role in making neurotransmitters cross a synapse. The neurotransmitters themselves are organic molecules, not ions.
Can mental illness be curable? I would say yes. I believe in the environment being the main role in how a person is. All persons have eccentric or idiosyncratic things about them, but not everyone is labeled. I do think that "all roads lead to Rome." Just because there are or were problems in one's life, each moment brings you forward to the future. I believe each person has more potential than what you see. I don't like labeling persons with such and such an illness.
Neurotransmitters diffuse across the synaptic cleft to bind to membrane receptors on the next neuron. This initiates a synaptic potential.
