The "Jazz Age" as it was called, was the period coming out of the First World War (pretty much the 1920). It was a period where the new generation of young adults were rebelling against their parents traditions, music, and culture. With the addition of the Prohibition to this mix (the U.S. law at the time that stated that alcohol wasn't allowed), many young people would combine all of these scandalous elements together, feeding off of their elders disapproval.

Though we now respect it as a positive, predominantly African American contribution to the American identity, Jazz Music specifically was seen as vulgar as it was the music of black people. This, along with the elements of excitement and dance that it encouraged, were very attractive to those wanting to rebel and simply "live the high life" of the "Roaring Twenties".
