It is not known when the first guitar was made. This is in part because the guitar evolved from other string instruments and was not an invention. Many cultures used instruments recognized as precursors to the guitar. These include, most importantly, the lute, originally a one string instrument which was plucked and is known to date to Egyptian times. The lute was improved and had strings added during the Renaissance.

It was during the Renaissance that the term guitar originated as a family of strung instruments, these instruments were significantly different than the modern guitar. The guitar as we know it developed in part with orchestral string instruments, the lute as well as with ethnic instruments such as the banjo and Ukulele. The development of the classical guitar in Latin America marks the development of the guitar as we know it. The dimensions, internal bracing and number of strings make it the platform from which the modern guitar took it's form.
