I think your shocks are sticking or getting stuck as they move up and down. You probably need to replace them. It could also be that one of the components of the suspention is loose or worn out so check all of the bushings and ball joints.

What would cause a 1998 Ford Taurus to sound like a helicopter while driving and then have the sound go away at roughly 65 MPH?

The sound you are hearing could be coming from bad Tires. As the Tires Feather because of misalignment or suspension issues, they develop an uneven wear pattern. If the noise gets louder as your speed increases, this could be your problem. Get to a Tire Dealer and have your Tires and Suspension Checked. :-) Another noise that sounds like a tire noise is a wheel bearing going bad. IF you take you hand and feeling the tread around the tire, you can tell if there is a smooth feel or a wavy feel or choppy feel etc. Anything other than a smooth feel could cause a roar. IF your struts are original, they may be causing a choppy wear.

Why do you hear a grinding and popping sound coming from the front left wheel when you drive?

A grinding and popping sound from the front left wheel could indicate several issues, such as worn brake pads, a damaged wheel bearing, or a problem with the suspension components. If the brake pads are worn down, they may grind against the rotor, while a failing wheel bearing can create a popping noise as it loses stability. Additionally, loose or damaged suspension parts, like struts or control arms, can cause similar sounds when driving. It's essential to have the vehicle inspected by a mechanic to diagnose and address the issue promptly.
