Evidence of Islam in Uganda dates back at least to 1844 and possibly to 1830. The arrival of Christian missionaries after 1875 hindered the success of the Muslim missionaries.

In 1884, Mwanga became king of Buganda, the dominant tribe in what is now Uganda and, although instructed in Christianity as a child, favoured the Muslims because they were more tolerant of his homosexuality than were the Christian missionaries. Mwanga's younger brother and successor refused to be circumcised, as required by the Muslims, and he was replaced by yet another brother.

A revolt by the Christian population saw Mwanga restored to the throne and he, of course, gave his allegiance to the Christian missionaries in spite of their opposition to sodomy. Muslims now represent around 12 per cent of the Ugandan population.
