Evidence of Islam in Uganda dates back at least to 1844 and possibly to 1830. The arrival of Christian missionaries after 1875 hindered the success of the Muslim missionaries.
In 1884, Mwanga became king of Buganda, the dominant tribe in what is now Uganda and, although instructed in Christianity as a child, favoured the Muslims because they were more tolerant of his homosexuality than were the Christian missionaries. Mwanga's younger brother and successor refused to be circumcised, as required by the Muslims, and he was replaced by yet another brother.
A revolt by the Christian population saw Mwanga restored to the throne and he, of course, gave his allegiance to the Christian missionaries in spite of their opposition to sodomy. Muslims now represent around 12 per cent of the Ugandan population.
Religion was introduced to Uganda in the late 19th century, primarily with the arrival of Christian missionaries. The Church Missionary Society (CMS) began its work in Uganda in 1877, followed by other groups such as the Roman Catholics and the Seventh-day Adventists. Islam also had a presence in Uganda prior to this, having been introduced in the early 19th century by traders and explorers. Consequently, Uganda's religious landscape has been shaped by a blend of indigenous beliefs, Christianity, and Islam.
