The Swedish version was first written for Fridas solo album. It was about a man called Fernando who's gf broke up with him. The woman who sings have been through the same thing and want them both to console each other.
The English version is likely a reference to the Mexican revolution in 1910 where the singer take side for one of the rebels that crosses over the Rio Grande to fight the federal troops. The second paragraph is speculation at best, based entirely on the song's lyrics. Any sixth grade level intelligence could do as much. The reference to the Rio Grand River has another completely different meaning.
