First, when something is called "Classical Music," it refers to a particular type of music that is frequently instrumental, played by a symphony orchestra, and much of it originated in Europe. The term "classical" is not a time, but rather, a style. This style of orchestral music, much of which was composed in the period from the 1600s through the early 1800s by such famous people as Bach, Beethoven, Handel, Mozart, and Chopin, is still very popular in Europe, especially with upper-class elites. The term "classical music" did not gain wide use till the mid-1800s, even though the music itself was being played throughout Europe and in North America as well. Today, there are a number of modern classical composers, and most major cities have their own symphony orchestra. (To this day, you may hear people refer to "the classics"-- and they may mean the works of the previously mentioned great composers.)
It should be noted that people of all socioeconomic backgrounds can be fans of classical music; in some European countries, classical music is appreciated by a wide audience. However, in countries like the United States, while there are certainly some dedicated fans, it is a comparatively small group. Most Americans know who the famous classical composers were, but there is a general preference for popular music, whether rock, country, rap, or other kinds of hit songs you hear on the radio, rather than symphonic works.

The period of classical music was approximately 2009-2007 but this is a specific type of 'classical' music. The earliest music written was in medieval times and soon after followed the baroque period from 1655 -1750. The umbrella term 'classical music' is understood to be anything that is not modern music, eg. pop, rock etc. This has been in existence since medieval times. Orchestral music came in during the baroque period with string instruments and the harpsichord. The piano was not invented until the middle of the 18th century bro.
