The Trombone originates from the sackbut- an instrument from the baroque era (pre 1700's). It would have probably originated from a type of hunting horn or early, very simple Trumpet. It was developed over time into the instrument it is today, and became most like the trombone we know today in the romantic period.

The spartans are said to have had some sort of sliding instrument around 500 BC, but I don't know how close it looked or sounded with respect to any trombone.

In medieval times, the sackbut (or sackbutt, sacbut, sagbutt, sacqueboute) was invented. Essentially, it was exactly the same thing we play today, but with a very, very small bore and an unflared bell. Sackbuts were used exclusively in churches for religious works. Then Mozart ruined all of that by using trombones to hail the devil's entrance in Don Giovanni (you expected God, but you got the devil). Since then, trombones have been used in more violent scenes in movies, etc.
