MAF sensor, it will start up but when no signal from the sensor it will shut the engine down
p0170 is a generic code and it can be caused by number of issues volume air flow sensor failed (inside MAF sensor) injector failed incorrect fuel pressure air drawn in from gaps in gaskets, seals, etc O2 sensor failed engine coolant temperature sensor failed barometric pressure sensor failed exhaust leak use of incorrect fuel then of course ECM/PCM fail However, if the engine runs good try to clean the MAF sensor it may help.
The problems you're describing should show up on an engine diagnostic scan. The code readers are available at most auto parts retailers. Some retailers will lend, rent or sell you a code reader that can help you discover the problem. A 2000 vehicle uses the newer OBD2 system, and the code readers are actually quite easy to use.
