The term "devil's music" is most often used to describe rock music in general, or the darker, more hardcore subgroups of rock music specifically.

Rock Music has traditionally celebrated very liberal values, such as drug use, "free love" (meaning, freedom to express your sexuality and to have sex with whomever you please), rejection of traditional societal norms, and rebellion for rebellion's sake.

To some, drug use and sexual expression are sins, and human sin and vice were supposedly created by the Devil. Thus, a type of music that celebrates these things would naturally be viewed by some as "the Devil's music."

Rock 'n roll culture's rejection of traditional values is also viewed as sinful and wrong. Even though the Bible never says, "Thou shalt wear a suit and work for corporate America" or "Yea, polo shirts and khakis are the Lord's clothing" or "Thou shalt care deeply what the neighbors think" or "And God said, man shalt not dress in ladies' clothing..." Even though the Bible never says any of these things, many people regard anyone who does not live their life according to traditional middle-class American values as corrupt and depraved.

Rock music is the music of the counterculture, and to some, the counterculture is inherently sinful, corrupt and depraved. Since the values and lifestyle of the counterculture are -- according to some -- unholy, the music that celebrates these liberal values is also unholy: "Devil's music."

There are also some who take this misconception a step further: there are some who actually believe that rock musicians worship the Devil. This isn't true. The vast, vast majority of rock artists do not worship the Devil, or have anything to do with Satanism at all. Some, like Marilyn Manson or Black Sabbath, use demonic imagery on their album covers, and talk about the Devil in their songs, but they do it solely to shock and upset people: since rock & roll has always been about the unallowed, the taboo, and since the Devil is about as unallowed and taboo as you can get, it is unsurprising that lyrics and images of the Devil are used by (some) rock bands. But it is all for show; they don't really believe in all that stuff.

In other words, conservative people call rock 'n roll "the Devil's music." So, as a joke, rock musicians talk about the Devil in their songs, or tattoo images of the Devil on their skin, or put demonic imagery on their album covers. But the conservative types don't get that it's a joke. To them, it confirms what they already believed: these people DO worship the Devil! And so the myth keeps perpetuating itself.

Sometimes the term "Devil's music" is used to describe some of the darker, more extreme subgenres of rock, particularly subgenres of heavy metal. Most of the bands belonging to these subgenres are no more "Satanic" than any other kind of rock. They're just very dark and scary and sinister, and to people who don't know anything about them, they certainly seem like they COULD be Satanic.

There are some exceptions, though. There is a subgenre of heavy metal called, "Satanic black metal." However, it is important to note that even Satanists do not worship the Devil. They do not worship any deity. And they don't sacrifice animals and/or children, either. Children and animals are considered the purest form of life, and thus are held sacred.

What Satanism really is, and what most people THINK it is, are two very different things. When most people think of Satanism, they imagine figures in dark hoods sacrificing a baby and drinking its blood. But in reality, Satanism is not a violent religion. It's not even a religion, really. It's just a set of beliefs that are distinctly anti-Christian.

For example, instead of following the Golden Rule ("Do unto others as you would have them do unto you") Satanists have their own rule: "Do unto others as they do unto you." Meaning, if someone hurts you, you are perfectly entitled to get revenge.

Satanism is sort of the "me" religion. It's all about gratifying your own needs and wants, whenever you want, however you want. Satanism isn't about violence and hate. It's more about being selfish, and celebrating selfishness, and also carnal, earthly pleasures, and the celebration of carnal, earthly pleasures.
