During the film one of the main sub plots it Dr. Hannibal Lecter a psychiatrist analysing Clarice Starling the FBI agent. A lot of her personality seems to come down to an incident on a farm when she was a child in which she came across lambs being slaughtered and tried to rescue one of them.
