a violin and a viola
On your chin in the chin rest.
The wood used to make a violin would vary from the tie period it was made and the location it was made in. The most common type of wood for the "front part" is spruce.
You slide it on from the behind. The easiest way is to sit down, put the violin between your thighs to keep it from moving, then slide on the shoulder rest and VOILA! Shoulder rest is on:) Remember to make sure that the wider side is on the right.
Its official name is the bass viol, although it is seldom referred to as such. It is actually of a different type than the rest of the string instruments (violin, viola, and cello)- it is part of the older group of instruments called viols. The viols were popular during the renaissance, and featured sloped shoulders and different shaped resonance holes (F holes) than the violin family. Viols came in all different sizes, and the smaller ones eventually evolved into the violin family. For some reason, however, the bass never came along with the rest of them, and has remained in the old style. Another name for the bass is the contrabass.
A chin rest allows the violinist or violist to hold their instrument more easily. Both these instruments are held not with the left hand, as it may appear to an observer, but between the left shoulder and the chin. The hand must be free to move up and down the instrument so that the musician can change positions quickly and freely. The chin rest generally makes the instrument easier to grip with the chin, but some musicians may prefer to play without one.
On your chin in the chin rest.
wood
Nothing, but put it back on.
To get the size you need, just put the chin rest of a violin under your chin as you would if you were about to play. Then stretch out the arm you use to hold the violin straight out. If the violin's scroll reaches your wrist, it's the size for you.
