Well awans basically should be called 'kutab shahi awan', The addition of 'malik' depends on the area and culture they are living in. For eg. malik can be an arayeen, b/w pashto speakers/other casts etc.

Awans are the descendants of the fourth Caliph, Ali(RA) and belong to 'banu hashim tribe' (famous tribe linked to Holly prophet (SAW)...

Therefore Awans are supposed to be the 2nd closest after 'sayyeds' among all other casts.

When some tribes from Yamama refused to pay tax imposed by khalifa Hazrat Abu bakar (RA) admin....Most of them were taken to Makkah (arrested), that was the time when Hazrat Fatima (RA) had expired and Hazrat Ali married a lady 'Khola bint-e-jaffar of 'banu hanifa tribe'. Khola (RA) used to be called as al-hanafiya due to her linkage with 'banu-hanifa'. Muhammad bin al-hanafiya was born to HAzrat Ali(RA) and from there Awans originated.

The recent ancestor was 'Qutab Shah and his brothers' who was the ruler of Herat and the general of Mahmood Ghaznavi's army n it is widely believed that Ghaznavi could only manage to occupy most lands due to their bravity.

Ghaznavi's soldiers n commanders came into subcontinent Pakistan, Afghanistan, India n started living there marrying local women. That's how they came into now adays Pakistan, India, Iran etc.

Awans are known for their bravity he Pakistani military has always heavily recruited Awans and as is consistent with the past, the tribe continues to produce a considerable number of recruits who occupy many of the senior-most ranks of the Pakistani_Army. "The Awan Tribe is perhaps the most heavily recruited tribe for the Pakistan Army
