Michael Jackson credits Jeffrey Daniel for teaching Jackson the "Moonwalk". Jeffrey Daniel is a dancer, choreographer, singer-songwriter and performer who Jackson first saw Daniel perform the "backslide" on the American TV show Soul Train. In 1980, Jackson asked Daniel (together with dance partners Geron Candidate and Cooley Jackson) to teach him the said dance technique.
Daniel premiered the move on British television in 1982, during a performance of Shalamar's "A Night to Remember" on, the BBC 1 music show, Top of the Pops. Michael Jackson first "moonwalked" on the "Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever" television broadcast to the song "Billie Jean" in 3/83.
Note: The information above is based on research conducted on online reference and video websites. Michael Jackson's statement in his autobiography that three street kids taught it to him is now believed to be false.
Moonwalk is a dance technique popularized by Michael Jackson when his historic performance of "Billie Jean" on Motown 25 on March 25, 1983 which became his signature move. According to Nelson George Michael's rendition is combined Jackie Wilson's athleticism with James Brown's camel walk. James Brown is one of the biggest childhood inspiration of Michael.
Jackson was a big fan in the 1970s of Soul Train. He soon met, learned from, and later hired dancer/choreographers from the Soul Train TV show. Dance partners Geron "Casper" Candidate and Cooley Jackson claim that they taught Michael Jackson the moonwalk. Casper also claims that he still has the check stub Michael Jackson used to pay Cooley and himself for teaching Michael the moonwalk.
According to Quincy Jones Michael Jackson's talent both singing and dancing was completely natural. He never took lessons for either. He told this to Larry King June 27th 2009.
Michael taught himself how to spin
Nobody, it was a natural talent.

MICHAEL JACKSON !Michael Jackson made the moonwalk popular in the 1980's.EDIT: Michael Jackson made the moonwalk popular, but the moonwalk was founded before he started it. The credit of inventing the moonwalk should go to the kids in a school in Kolkata who were reported too be the first ones to do the moonwalk. This is where Michael Jackson got the inspiration to do the moonwalk.

Well, the "moonwalk" is the perfected backslide. "Backslide" was before "moonwalk" but Michael Jackson perfected the "backslide" which later on became the "moonwalk."

Bill Baley in (1955) invented the moonwalk. Michael Jackson got the moonwalk from soul train. I think in 1981 on Soul Train, there were guest performers, and they did the moonwalk. Michael thought it was a awesome dance and he wanted to learn it.
