Technically it wasn't invented in 1884. As early as the 1600s, the Chinese made a kind of pickled fish mixed in with spices and called it ke-tsiap. And by the 1700s, it had found its way over to Malaysia, where it was discovered by explorers from Britain. By about 1740, it had ended up becoming popular in England. Then, 50 years later, North Americans decided to add tomatoes into the original recipe, and that is the ketchup we now know.
