The Rolling Stones and The Who are both equally talented bands. Critics across the boards agree that The Who in their prime are the greatest live rock band in the history of the medium whereas the Stones are the most top 40, sexual, sinister and bluesy of the two.
Because The Stones have never broken up and The Who have broken up and disbanded intermittently, The Stones are more well known but only in the mainstream press as most rock aficionados rate the Who third in line after The Stones and The Beatles as the top three British bands of all time in terms of popularity and cultural significance.
The Who's Keith Moon has been considered in poll after poll, rock's greatest drummer and John Entwistle is credited with revolutionizing not just bass playing but bass construction and bass amplification as well. Bill Wyman's bass playing has not made much of a ripple in most critics and rock journalist's books but Charlie Watts is in the top ten greatest rock drummers in many critics' lists.
Keith Richards and Pete Townshend are both very talented and very different guitarists so it is hard to say who is the better lead axeman. Keith Richards in usually considered one of the top five greatest living guitarists. Roger Daltrey is hands down a more powerful vocalist by critics than Sir Mick Jagger but Mick sings more ballads and is more of a flamboyant showman.
Both groups became famous around the same time and are still in touch with each other to this day as close friends. Great references books on both bands are "Maximum RnB" by Richard Barnes and The Rolling Stones Illustrated Record by David Dalton. Both The Who and The Rolling Stones appear in "The Rolling Stones Rock N Roll Circus" a legendary 1969 concert kept in the vaults for nearly thirty years and now available to the public. Pete Townshend played guitar on Mick Jagger's most recent solo album "Goddess in the Doorway." Jerry Hall, mother of four of Mick Jagger's children, is best friends with Pete Townshend and his partner, musician/singer Rachel Fuller.
Both bands have only won life time achievement Grammys as opposed to a "sweep" with multiple awards. And while The Who, unlike the Stones have never had a number one album or single, The Who have been awarded the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors Medal by the President of the United States.
