answer must be based on knowledge and experience. If one wants to give an intelligent opinion, then one must first have heard the music of the world over the 1,200 years during which we have a reasonable idea what his music sounded like. It's astounding that people who have only heard American popular music of the past 50 years are so quick to give an opinion on who is the greatest musician in the world.

Some serious answers may include: Bach, Brahms, Mozart, Wagner, Palestrina, Monteverdi, Gould, Coltrane, Jarrett, Parker, Gadd, Wonder, Toscanini, Horowitz... and the best-WILLIAM CAMILLERI

The dunderhead who answered before me did exactly what you did not advise.

The question is a difficult one and can only be answered based on the limited knowledge we possess .

The greatest living musicians are , IMHO , Henri Dutileux, and Karl Jenkins. Jean Francaix , too was great , but he died 13 odd years ago. In another 100 years , the works of these great composers may be revered in the same way Mozart's or Bach's works are.

The obvious answer for this question is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart who had reached a level neither of the other two claimants to this title reached at the age he died. They subsequently surpassed him later on in their lives , but had Mozart lived to Bach's age he would have exalted music to another level and Beethoven would not have got half the adulation he did get during his life.

The jazz greats, Duke Ellington and company also lay claim to feature in this list ; I would put Ellington roughly on the level of Franz Liszt.

The greatest rock musicians were Freddie Mercury and Pink Floyd. Sadly , the serious fan of neither exists and 100 years from now, people will still be doing Jenkins' 'Armed Man' but no-one will bother with Pink Floyd's progressive suites. Queen may be performed off and on.

Here's the list then :

1. W A Mozart

2. J S Bach tied with L V Beethoven

4. Richard Wagner

5. Joseph Haydn

6. Johannes Brahms

7. Franz Schubert

8. Gustav Mahler

9. Robert Schumann

10 . Fredric Chopin.

That is debatable but in all honesty I think J.S.Bach is the greatest musician for without him hip-hop, rap, rock and even reggae. He basically invented it all but then there came Mozart ( Ingenious with his serenades ) Chopin ( Honorable pianist along with Liszt the master of piano ) and now the easier pieces of music is now the best like JLS who probably don't even write their own music!
