I reckon one of the most successful bands is Led Zeppelin among other bands, but that's my opinion.

The most successful band in every considerable terms of measuring the succes or popularity is ofcource The Beatles.

Success money wise would have to be Green Day. Lots would argue that they are not "punk," so a better answer for those people would most likely be The Ramones. The Dropkick Murphys have gained a lot of respect outside of the punk world, having a number of their songs appear in blockbuster movies, which generates a large revenue. Of course Blink 182 and the Offspring could be considered amung the top of "the Most successful," thought again, many would argue that they are not "punk." My personal favorite would be Rancid, but that is completely biased, again, since they are my favorite band

The Sex Pistols were the most famous, of course. But if you count New Wave, the Boomtown Rats had two UK number-ones (Rat Trap and I Don't Like Mondays), a dozen hit singles, and five hit albums. On the other hand, the Clash had twice as many UK hit singles and albums, plus they huge hits in America, so they massively outsold every other punk and new wave artiste. Unless you count Generation X's lead singer Billy Idol, who was HUGE in America in the 80s...
