Filmed rock and roll performances date back to the early 1950s when artists such as Bill Haley and His Comets filmed "Soundies" which were short films played over specially designed juke boxes. Starting in 1956 motion pictures such as The Girl Can't Help It and Rock Around the Clock began presenting rock and roll performances in a cinematic style. In the 1960s artists such as The Beatles began producing promotional films for broadcast on shows like Ed Sullivan.

The first Music Videos of the type familiar to MTV viewers emerged in the late 1970s, with artists such as the Bee Gees, Blondie and Lene Lovich filming them, again for broadcast on variety programs. Michael Nesmith, late of the Monkees, may have been an early pioneer in this field with his short-lived 1980's TV series "Television Parts."
