I would not say that Paul was outbid. What happened is that back in the the early sixties John and Paul's manager told them to get a contract to copyright their music. So they sighed a contract without reading it and got into a terrible situation. The company after John and Paul tried to obtain full ownership of the song book by buying out the company, were eventually bought out by them. Then years later Paul talked to Michael Jackson about how that year alone he made 40 million dollars of his solo music songbook. This got Jackson in a spending frenzy buying tons of songbooks. Then the company that owned The Beatles songbook offered to sell it to McCartney for 40 million dollars and he declined saying it was too much. Then a couple years later the company was going out of business and offered McCartney again. This time he talked to Yoko since he did not want to buy it on his own since it was his and Johns and Yoko was John since he was dead. Yoko said the songbook was not worth that much and declined so McCartney turned it down. Then Jackson heard and sent a friend in and told him to buy the songbook at any cost. Then Jackson made a deal with Sony and made millions. When McCartney heard Jackson bought it he swore never to talk to him again.
