The first real piano was built in 1700 by an Italian, Bartolomeo Cristofori (1655-1731), so it could play soft and loud. A harpsichord had a standard volume no matter how hard you played the notes, the more notes you played the louder it sounded. But with a piano you could play soft and loud even if you're only playing one note.
