He was diagnosed in 1986 with early-stage Vitiligo, which is a disease that strips away skin pigment. This made him appear to "turn white." It first effected his arms and hands. It is speculated that he wore the white glove to hide his condition from everyone. However, hiding it via the white glove would only work for so long. The Vitiligo expanded over his whole body in due time.

According to Chicago Sun-Times, however, "Mike's glove infatuation came at a Hollywood production studio in 1980 when he noticed an editor handling film with a single white glove to keep smear marks off. The young star was intrigued."

It could have been one or the other, or a combination of both.

Michael Jackson had Vitiligo, a disorder that involves faulty function or death of melanocytes, which pigment the skin. Jackson started wearing the glove because the Vitiligo appeared in his hand first.
