Because he was employed by the archbishop as a violinist when he wasn't touring around Europe with his father (Leopold), and that archbishop understood that they had to take extended leaves. But when the archbishop died and a new one was announced he put a stop to the extended leaves and eventually fired Mozart so he moved to Vienna, Austria to solely focus on composing and teaching.
