By broader end you mean the bell. Its the amplifier. Just like when you cup you hand around your ear and the sound becomes directional, the bell on the Trumpet works the other way round and forces the sound to all be directed into one small(er) area.
Imagine a candle. It glows and all around the room you have a dim glow.
Now imagine a candle and you put a concave mirror behind it. The glow becomes a bright spot on the wall. You still have the same amount of brightness but you are using it all in one location so it is more intense.
The bell works in the same way as the concave mirror by focusing the sound and thereby making it appear louder.
