The world of luthiery is quite experimental,
a series of changes in the construction of Guitars by c.f Martin (a luthier that immigrated to the U.S in the late 19th century)
enabled to enhance the volume of the guitar when combined with still strings. this kind of instrument became popular in the U.S for country/Folk Music with the famous dreadlock model by c.f Martin&co which is the basic model for today acoustic guitars.
although blues muisicans of that time also played with still strings they didnt often use this model.

Acoustic guitars don't; the hollow body acts as a sounding board, making the notes louder.
