The Nox emissions on the '93-'' 95 era G. Cherokees are controlled %100 by the catalytic converter!. There is no EGR on these 4.0 liter 6 cylinder engines, so the Nox gets very high. Very irritating that older Cherokees in rather rough condition pass because they have EGR systems while my Grand with a NEW ENGINE won't! Needless to say my car has great compression, all new tuneup parts and filters, new O2 sensor and cleaned injectors!
It has required a new Cat every 2 years since I owned it (@8 years) and the really expensive CAT that is OEM (@$700) didn't last any longer. Now I failed again. Owning an older car in California is HELL! Oh yeah, I changed the crank position sensor, map sensor also- no effect. A new Cat will get you over the hurdle (just!) however, I doubt it really can keep it clean more than a week or two. By the way, No error codes, runs like a clock and I've been a mechanic for over 40 years. Its really the manufacturer's and States fault but the problem is all owned by the poor owner. Del
