There are numerous reasons for people being categorized as having mental and/or physical disabilities. "Birth defects" may be the result of chromosomal abnormalities (as in spina bifidaor Downs syndrome) or trauma (as in cerebral palsy). This means that the damage can be the result of a genetic mutation, or it can be caused by difficulties during birth. In the case of cerebral palsy something has caused oxygen to be cut off from the brain during the birth process and depending on how long and which part of the brain is affected, the damage can be great or minor.

Besides birth defects, disabilities may occur later in life due to disease or trauma. Multiple sclerosis, for example, is a disease that attacks the nervous system causing ever-reduced control of the muscles. People may also suffer strokes or other brain trauma which limit their ability to control their muscles or process information in the normal ways. And, of course, people may lose limbs for various reasons, causing them to need special adaptations to continue normal activities.

Disabilities are comparative in nature, that is, something is considered a disability only because those who have it cannot perform physically or mentally in the ways most other people can do. However, after adaptations have been made, there need be no loss in quality of life. Since each of us has greater or lesser abilities in different areas, adaptation is very much the norm in life.
