Traditional sealing wax is a combination of

orange flake shellac beeswax, and ordinary plaster of paris. In some recipes a few drops of 100% pure essential oil is added to scent the sticks. Much like setters cement used in jewelry manufacture ; to set stones by hand one embeds the workpiece in "setter's cement" a combination of shellac in flake form and a number of other additives, and/or pitch - in either the burgundy or "black" variety.

In my own formula I use orange flake shellac, beeswax with the propolis ( so I don't have to refine the natural beeswax as it is a resin into itself),and gum Arabic or hand harvested pine pitch that has completely hardened and turned a rich mahogany or deep garnet reddish colour ( indicating the water is evaporated out of the pine pitch which can then be collected from older pine trees globally). It starts out as a quite sticky clear liquid sappy exudate and turns to a sugary crystalline substance appearing yellow then clarifies to an amber colour .With age and exposure to the elements it ends up as a brittle reddish gum resin.

Harvesting hardened pine pitch is an actually fun activity for families , scout troops and individuals looking for a cheap natural history oriented outing that results in the collection of a very versatile substance with applications from the arts to making fire starting sticks. Fatwood is a naturally occurring form of the pine pitch in root wood and can be used as is, though it can be split into smallish lengths or whittled into shavings and stored in a tinder box as a fire starting aid!It is highly flammable and in sealing wax may cause the stick to catch fire when directly heated with an open flame!

A number of more modern patents (ca.1950's onward) for sealing wax can be found that combine natural waxes ( carnauba being the hardest wax on the planet known thus far barring undiscovered botanical sources), and vinyl/acetate copolymers ( other wise known as plastics!),and "extenders that can be anything from plaster or shellacs as mentioned above.

Ordinarily or rather historically they are referred to as sealing wax candles and can be wicked, or wick-less. Wick-less sealing wax usually being melted in a sealing wax ladle- an iron crucible of sorts with pouring spouts or dimples cast into the mould for the ladle and generally having 10 or 12 gauge wire "feet" to allow the thing to be set level on a table as one ignites their alcohol lamp over which the ladle is held by a wooden handle ( most commonly) to melt the wax into then pouring the sealing wax over one's project. For instance sealing a bottle. Wicked sealing wax candles generally have sugar treated cotton wicks ( in their purest form and historically correct) embedded in the sticks form/mould and are used for sealing letters.

Recently a number of products have entered the consumer market that are "preformed" with a droplet for authenticity and sold in sheets, or as small discs of waxes that are used with a heat gun to Scrapbooking hobbyists. This type can be found in pure beeswax, and soy waxes capitalizing on the "green" trend in marketing some having a self adhesive backing, which rather defeats the purpose of the greening of America , as the energy required to operate a heat gun ( another word for a blow drier!) is excessive. These discs are also sold with powders and other embellishing treatments like iridescent or pearlizing pigments to "customize" the no longer simple wax seal.

Which is more negatively charged sealing wax silk or teflon?

Teflon is generally more negatively charged compared to sealing wax and silk when they are rubbed against other materials. This is due to Teflon's higher affinity for electrons, making it a stronger electron donor. In contrast, sealing wax and silk have different properties and typically retain fewer negative charges under similar conditions. Therefore, Teflon exhibits a greater tendency to acquire a negative charge compared to the other two materials.

Yes, that was done to make sure the letter wasn't read by someone else other than who the letter was for. Government documents were sealed with red tape and a wax seal protecting them from people who shouldn't read them. Today, you can still by sealing wax and a wax seal to do your own letters with this old custom. As a teenager I had a kit to do this and for a long time all my letters were sealed with wax.
