The cost to replace a dimmer switch can vary depending on the type and quality of the dimmer switch you choose, as well as any additional labor or installation fees. On average, you can expect to pay between $20 to $50 for a basic dimmer switch, but this cost can increase if you opt for a more advanced or smart dimmer switch. Additional costs may also apply if you hire a professional electrician to install the dimmer switch.

How much voltage loss with a dimmer switch when used for lights?

The voltage loss from using a dimmer switch varies depending on the type of dimmer and the settings used. In most cases, a standard dimmer switch can introduce a voltage drop of around 5-20% when dimming the lights. This reduction in voltage helps regulate the amount of current flowing to the light fixture, allowing for variable brightness levels.

Will it damage a compact fluorescent bulb if one has a dimmer switch but keeps the dimmer set as high as possible?

Fluorescent bulbs can't be dimmed. It takes a certain amount of electricity to get them to come on. Probably about half way on the switch. As long as it has that much it should light. The switch however doesn't like it and will burn out quicker than with regular bulbs. The bulb doesn't care, it is either lit or not. Thanks. I just went ahead and installed a standard light switch. Everything is working fine and energy efficient. ~ CheeseKing

Can you use a dimmer switch on a very small AC motor?

No, dimmer switches are not suitable for use with small AC motors. Dimmer switches are designed for use with incandescent or LED lights and may not provide the necessary control or protection for a motor. It is recommended to use a motor speed controller designed specifically for small AC motors.

Is it cause for concern if one wall in a room by a light switch is always warm to the touch?

Be very careful. If the wires behind your light switch plate are hot enough to do that, you have a hazardous condition. Perhaps you should switch off your house's electricity for awhile and call someone to come out and have a look at it. I know that gets expensive, but you're very likely to have a fire with wiring like that

Difference in dimmer switch heat 600 watts or 1000 watts?

A dimmer switch is used for lighting loads and not heating loads. The wattage rating on a dimmer switch is what the manufacturer recommends as the maximum load that the switch can handle. For example if you have ten 100 watt lamps, the total load wattage would be 1000 watts (10 x 100). Too much load for a 600 watt rated dimmer switch but not for a 1000 Watt rated dimmer switch. So you can see that the rating on a dimmer switch governs the maximum wattage load that can be connected in the circuit that is to be controlled.

Where is the Dimmer Switch located on a 1991 Park Ave.?

The dimmer switch is located under the dash to the left of the steering column. Unfortunately I don't know of any way to get to it without dismantling the dash and the steering column. Even with those items removed, it was a real chore to get at it. When we replaced my dimmer switch, we got everything back together and found that the rod that connects the dimmer switch to the lever on the steering column was bending too much to activate the new dimmer switch. This job took all day and was a waste of time and money as we have a new dimmer switch but it is useless without fixing the connecting rod problem.

Can you use a fan control switch as a dimmer switch?

Probably not, since a volume control switch is designed for extremely low current measured in fractions of a watt, while a dimmer switch is typically capable of handling several hundred watts.

What do you if the interior cab lights on a 1997 Ford Ranger will not turn off?

Did you try turning the dimmer switch to a lower setting, sometimes the dome light will stay on even if the door is closed if the switch is set to high. But if the dimmer switch is set propertly, and the light remains on for a few minutes, the problem is most probably a defective relay. There are 3 relays on my 97 Ford Ranger, and I have not found out which controls the light. The relays cost too much just to buy 3 of them. If tou have tried dimmer switch and that did not work try using wd 40 on the the latches. The interior lights stay on until the switch in the door is cleaned and lubed. The switch is within door latches on for ranger. !
