Yes , but on a very small motor. Check the specs. of the dimmer as most will tell you how much they can be loaded to.

What can one do with the Lutron Dimmer?

A dimmer switch is very helpful as if you attach one to your light switch you can control your light intensity, the Lutron Dimmer is a brand dimmer switches that provide high quality performance.

Why does a dimmable eco bulb not dim when controlled from a dimmer switch?

The bulb must be labeled as dimmable. If the bulb is an LED for example there is a circuit that transforms the 120 AC supply voltage to a DC voltage. This circuit needs to be able to supply a DC voltage proportional to the voltage required to operate the LEDs. In a dimmable bulb you might be powering the multiple LEDs selectively to achieve dimming rather than just reducing voltage to all LEDs over a very small voltage range in which an LED operates.

What should you do if you installed a new light in an old house that uses a dimmer switch and now the light won't turn off?

Some lights won't dim. If you've installed the switch properly, and are using traditional incandescent bulbs (not flourescent, LED, E-L lights or any other very low current light), the dimmer will dim the bulbs. Make sure you're using a dimmable bulb and that the dimmer is installed properly.

How do you install a rheostat instead of a light switch?

A rheostat is an extremely ancient form of variable resistor that was used very largely to vary voltage. As you mention replacing a light switch, presumably you want to install a dimmer? If so, lighting dimmers are solid state and are a simple replacement for a standard switch. NOTE - you cannot use a conventional dimmer on anything but standard incandescent lamps. They will not work on low volt, fluorescent or halogen lamps (or HID). Make sure that the circuit breaker is turned off before starting work on changing the switch out. Just for the sake of convention the top wire on your conventional switch should be the hot one. Connect this same wire to the top wire that is on your new dimmer switch. Make sure that the dimmer switch is in the off position before turning the breaker back on.

How do you wire a 3-way dimmer switch that has two red wires and one black and one green when the box has two red and two black?

you can only have one dimmer, the other switch needs to be not a dimmer. the green wire is ground, it connects to a bare copper wire found in the box, or to the box itself, if the box is metal. the black wire is"common" it either connects to the wire found in the box that has power in it or to the black wire that goes to the light. the 2 red wires are"travelers" they connect to the wires found in the box that go from switch to switch. if you don't know how to check which wire does what( continuity), it is possible to keep changinging the connections until the switch works. you will want to do this with a conventional switch, and install the dimmer afer you identify what wires are travelers and wich are common. you will destroy a dimmer switch by searching for the right connection. once you have identified the common wires, it will be on the black screw of a 3way switch; you can put that wire on the black wire of the dimmer. one red goes on one traveler, the other on another traveler. there might be a white wire in the box, if it is connected to other white wires and not to the switch, leave it alone. if a single white wire is connected to old switch, it may be a traveler.you will connect a red dimmer wire to this. opening the other switch location will show you if the white wire is used as a traveler.the black wire has to be either power coming in, or the wire going to the light. the reds are just connecting the 2 switches.

Is it possible to use a dimmer switch to lower the voltage to a power tool?

Though this theoretically could work on a very few power tools, it is NOT a good idea and most likely doing it will only wreck the tool (or the dimmer switch). And why would you want to lower the voltage anyway?

How do you replace the dimmer switch in a 1979 Chevy El Camino?

The dimmer switch is located on the bottom of the steering column, just remove 2 bolts and it unplugs from the wiring, very easy to replace. Most auto parts stores sells them for around $15.00 bucks. Good luck!
