The soils around volcanos are the most fertile. Volcanos produce only about 1% as much CO2 as fossil fuels.Some scientists, (such as James Lovelock in his recent book, "Revenge of Gaia") believe that a few major eruptions is just what needed right now, to counteract global warming, at least for a few years.They also produce spectacular red sunsets around the world,which is a bonus. Mt. Pinitubo in the early 90's had both these effects.Of course, the area surrounding an eruption can be devastated by ash, lava and poisonous gasses.Large eruptions such as the Laki eruption in Iceland, 1782-1783,caused crop failures and famine in Europe, and droughts as far south as the Nile river.While they can be both good and bad for the living environment, they're a fundamental part of the envionment as a whole.
