Agents such as thiouracil and related antithyroid compounds that are capable of producing goiter.

Fermentation does not entirely inactivate goitrogens in cabbage, but it can reduce their levels. Goitrogens, which can interfere with thyroid function, are primarily found in raw cabbage and other cruciferous vegetables. The fermentation process can break down some of these compounds, making the cabbage potentially less harmful when consumed. However, cooking is generally more effective at reducing goitrogen levels compared to fermentation.
RAW cauliflower is safe for bearded dragons in small portions and on rare occasions. Cauliflower contains Goitrogens which mess with iodine and causes issues with the thyroid gland.
From what I have found on the Internet, Chinese kale seems to contain goitrogens. See pp. 148 and 149 of this scientific journal article by a group of Chinese researchers: http://www.academicjournals.org/AJB/PDF/pdf2008/18Jan/You%20et%20al.pdf. This article seems to indicate that in general the benefits of Chinese kale are greater than the disadvantages. But read the article carefully to distinguish between the seeds and the leaves of the plant - the chemical concentrations are very different. beamup2
On my Facebook page, T H E E C O C H E F, I wrote about soy, and posted a video link from Dr. Mercola. It is important to read and follow all you can with regard to soy, so that you are aware of the actual health risks of consuming soy, even organic, and even lacto-fermented. Soy presents three areas of concern: 1) Trypsin (protein digestion inhibitor) 2) Phytic Acid(nutrient inhibitor), and 3) Goitrogens (impairs thyroid function). Fermentation definitely breaks down trypsin and phytic acid, to make the soy more bio-available, but it is not clear as to whether it also breaks down the goitrogens, and there is even some evidence to suggest that it makes the goitrogens more bio-available. So, if you have any issues with your thyroid, you should avoid every kind of soy (soy milk, tofu, soy sauce, tamari), even fermented soy (tempeh, miso, and natto).
Iodine. Greatly enhances (is necessary) for thyroid function. Found abundantly in seaweeds, Himalayan salts, or also can be supplemented with nascent iodine or seaweed supplements (13mg/day recommended by some)... For thyroids it also helps to avoid goitrogens, foods which inhibit iodine integration, such as peanuts, soybeans, etc... Best wishes and happy health!
Yes, lizards can eat cabbage in moderation, as it is not toxic to them. However, cabbage should not be a staple in their diet, as it can lead to digestive issues due to its high fiber content and potential goitrogens. It's best to offer a variety of vegetables, fruits, and insects to ensure a balanced diet. Always check specific dietary needs based on the lizard species you have.
Eggplant and sayote (chayote) are not typically associated with causing goiter. Goiter is primarily linked to iodine deficiency or certain autoimmune conditions affecting the thyroid. However, some cruciferous vegetables can contain goitrogens, substances that may interfere with thyroid function, but eggplant and sayote are not significant sources of these compounds. A balanced diet with adequate iodine is important for thyroid health.
Yes, people with hypothyroidism can eat mung beans. These legumes are nutritious and provide protein, fiber, and essential vitamins and minerals. However, it's important to consume them in moderation and ensure a balanced diet, as some legumes can contain goitrogens that may interfere with thyroid function when consumed in large quantities. Consulting a healthcare provider or nutritionist is advisable for personalized dietary recommendations.
If you have a goiter, it's often recommended to avoid foods high in goitrogens, which can interfere with thyroid function. These include cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, and kale, especially when consumed raw. Additionally, foods like soy products and certain nuts, such as peanuts and pine nuts, may also be best limited. Cooking these foods can reduce their goitrogenic properties, making them safer to consume in moderation.
Cabbage, along with other cruciferous vegetables, contains goitrogens, which can interfere with thyroid function and potentially exacerbate goiter in susceptible individuals, especially if consumed in large amounts and when iodine intake is low. However, for most people with normal iodine levels, moderate consumption of cabbage is generally considered safe and can be part of a healthy diet. If you have a thyroid condition, it's best to consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
Desert tortoises should avoid eating red cabbage because it contains high levels of goitrogens, which can interfere with thyroid function. Additionally, red cabbage has a high oxalate content, which can lead to calcium absorption issues and potentially contribute to health problems like kidney stones. It's important for these tortoises to have a balanced diet primarily consisting of grasses, herbs, and other leafy greens.
