Polydactylism is the presence of extra fingers or toes. It is caused by genetic mutations, typically inherited from the parents. Often the extra digit can be surgically removed.
Polydactylism sometimes occurs alone, but more often with other abnormalities, such as cleft lip or palate, dental or vertebral deformities, and psychomotor retardation. Some of these can be corrected as well, so if your child is suffering from polydactylism they should be checked for other problems.
