No "people" have landed on Mars. The first country to land anything on Mars was Soviet Russia: Mars 2 and 3 of M-71 project in 1971.

The first spacecraft ever to make the journey from Earth to Mars was sent by the US. It was called the Mariner 4, which launched on November 28, 1964 and arrived at Mars July 14, 1965,Mariner 4′s total flight time was 228 days.

The next successful mission to Mars was Mariner 6, which blasted off on February 25, 1969 and reached the planet on July 31, 1969; a flight time of only 156 days. Mariner 7 only required 131 days to make the journey.

Mariner 9, the first spacecraft to successfully go into orbit around Mars launched on May 30, 1971, and arrived November 13, 1971 for a duration of 167 days.

on Mars.

The farthest that any human has been from earth is lunar orbit. When Mars

is as close to earth as it can get, it's about 200 times farther than that.

There is presently no project in progress, no planning, no budget, and no schedule

for a manned mission to Mars.

The remote-controlled robotic hardware that has explored tiny areas on the Martian

surface have been launched and operated by NASA and JPL in the US.

The Soviet Union sent the first Mars rovers. The first was Mars 2 which arrived in November of 1971. The following month, Mars 3 also arrived. Both missions failed. Mars 2 crashed onto the surface and Mars 3 landed okay but ceased radio transmission seconds later.

The first successful rover mission was by the United States which arrived in September 1997; the Pathfinder mission. The Pathfinder lander delivered the rover Sojourner.
