Well, a certain percentage of it is needed by the body. There is a fat coating on every nerve, like insulation on a wire. If this breaks down the nerves will stop working. You also need some to insulate the body and to feed you in times of illness. But, after about 18% in men/25% percent in women you are looking at harmful effects like stress on the joints, excess cholesterol, risk of Diabetes and Heart disease, raised blood pressure and some studies say increased risk of depression.
Our bodies need fat because we need energy when we are not eating. Fat is stored as back up energy.
so that you have energy in your body
Fat is used to cushion certain organs, there are fat pads in your eye, on your butt etc. all to act as cushions. Fat is also necessary to store energy that hasn't been consumed for later.
