At that time, grounds required Fencing to stop supporters getting onto the pitch, and in the melee 96 Liverpool fans were killed - crushed against the fences.

The aftermath of this tragedy was that fencing was abolished and all-seater stadia introduced at Premiership and Championship grounds.
