during the nuclear fission a slow moving neutron bombards a heavy nucleus which then splits into smaller fragments of nearly equal masses releasing large amount of energy. the energy liberated is due to the difference between the masses of the products and the sum of fissionable material and neutron. here matter is completely converted as explained by Einstein.

AKa: A nucleus is divided into more than one nucleus.

In Physics :During nuclear fission division of a heavy atomic nucleus into two fragments of roughly equal mass occur, accompanied by the release of a large amount of energy, the binding energy of the subatomic particles.

The energy released in the fission of one uranium nucleus is about 50 million times greater than that released when a carbon atom combines with oxygen atoms in the burning of coal. The energy appears as kinetic energy of the fragments, which converts to thermal energy as the fragments collide in matter and slow down. Fission also releases two or three free neutrons. The free neutrons can bombard other nuclei, leading to a series of fissions called a chain reaction. The energy released from nuclear fission is used to generate electricity, to propel ships and submarines, and is a source of the vast destructive power of nuclear weapons.

An electron is fired into the reactor core containing the radioactive material, usually uranium, and as it hits the radioactive nucleus the uranium atom breaks down forming two daughter nuclei and emitting another electron (beta radiation particle) which continues as a chain reaction.

During induced nuclear fission, the heavy nucleus (as uranium-235 and/or plutonium-239) is split through bombardment with a neutron into two (or less frequently three) fragments plus emitting 2-3 neutrons. During this process the deficit of mass due to fission is manifested in energy and radiation.

A chain reaction trees to a process in which neutrons released in fission produce an additional fission in at least one further nucleus. This nucleus in turn produces neutrons, and the process repeats. The process may be controlled (nuclear power) or uncontrolled (nuclear weapons).
