In a word, irrigation. In southern Arizona, the Gila River (649 miles / 1,044 km) drains a watershed estimated to be almost 60,000 square miles. Its headwaters are in southern New Mexico, but it's a tributary of the Colorado River that separates Arizona from California. Today, over five million people live in that watershed area. The Gila River itself has many tributaries that feed it along the way. The indigenous people of the area (Pima, Hohokam) constructed over 200 miles of irrigation to support large, complex civilizations along the Middle Gila River and the Salt River (a 200-mile [320 km] tributary). The upper Gila was used by the Mogollon culture as well.
