Glucose
We use a fermenting process to test for simple sugar like maltose.
They use sugar (glucose) to make energy (ATP) to drive the cell processes. They are called the powerhouses of the cell.
glucose (sugar) can diffuse through cell membranes
Chloroplasts in plant cells use the energy in light to produce sugar.

Cells use simple sugar molecules as a source of energy. The sugar molecules are broken down through a series of chemical reactions to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the energy currency of the cell. ATP is then utilized by the cell to fuel various cellular processes and functions. Additionally, some simple sugars may also be used in the synthesis of macromolecules such as proteins and lipids.

Simple cell phones are available at WalMart as well as any store that has a decent sized electronics department. The phone will be simple to use and very cheap.
The main energy source for fermentation is glucose, a simple sugar molecule. During fermentation, glucose is broken down into smaller molecules, releasing energy that the cell can use to produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy currency of the cell.

Vanilla sugar can be purchased in most spice stores and can also be found at some specialty grocers. It is however a fairly simple matter to make your own at home. Place one pound of sugar in a container that can be tightly sealed & add 1-2 vanilla beans split lengthwise. Shake occasionally to keep the sugar from clumping & in a few weeks it will be ready for use. Note: as you use the sugar do not discard the beans. You can add more sugar because the beans will retain their potency for approximately one year.
