It depends on the salt in question. Table salt, sea salt, iodized salt and other 'salt' you normally consume are merely sodium chloride crytals (NaCl) arranged into a regular ionic cubic lattice with the Na+ and CL- ions arranged in alternating positions. However any alkali metal reacting with a halogen (chlorine, fourine bromine, iodine) will also form a salt. KCl (potassium chloride) is technically a salt, but is used in lethal injections to stop the heart.
