Depends on what it is doing or not doing. Transmitter not working? Lighting strike can erase code in opener and need to be reset. Not shutting can be pressure sensitivity to light, sensors at base of door opening blocked or not working. Should have indicator light on each. A staple cutting into wire leading to sensor or wall switch. Odd openings can be someone close with same frequency. If not opening from far enough away, something can be blocking the antenna from picking up signal. There should be 6-8 inch single strand wire from bottom of opener. This is the antenna. A longer piece can be added to this to increase the reception. Troubleshooting: The source of the remote control range problem you may be having could be in your house. At the circuit box, turn off all circuits except the garage door opener. Test the opener. If the problem is eliminated, turn on each circuit one-by-one until the unit presents the reduced range problem. When you find it you will have a short list of home appliances which cause the problem. From there, unplug everything on that circuit and re-plug one-by-one until you find the culprit. Note: the culprit might be on the same circuit as the opener (then you have to unplug everything on that circuit).
Once you find the culprit, you might be able to use the appliance if you plug it into a different phase (see AC phase in Home Electricity). Or, if the culprit is on the same circuit you might simply need to move it to a different circuit.
A garage door opener and the garage light can be on the same circuit. The garage door opener has to be up stream (non switched 120 volt source) from the light switch and the garage light. As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed. Before you do any work yourself,on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances, always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOBSAFELY AND COMPETENTLYREFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.
On the side of the opener by where the thin wires connect there should be a 1/4 inch square button. Push this and you have 30 seconds to enter a 4 digit code in the remote pad and then press enter on the pad. That should do it. Instruction should be on the inside of the cover on the remote pad. I have had the same problem but when trying to get a number pad and a remote to work on the same opener has been a challenge! I can get either to work but I can not get both Suggestions I have two openers #1 Craftsman 139.53672 SRT1 mfg date 9-97 Key pad does not work (yes that sucks) #2 Craftsman 139.53910 mfg date 8-04 works like a charm go figure.
There are two types that I know of. One has bar in both the transmitter and opener with a series of little switches on it. They can be set in any combination of on/off as long as they match. The other type only has this in the transmitter. You set the combination you want and on the opener where the wall button wires attach there should be a small 1/4 inch square button. Push it and it should flash and then stay on. Push the button on the transmitter and the button should flash and go out. The opener should receive the new code.
It seems likely that you have programmed the opener to continue closing beyond the point when the door was closed. When it hits the ground, and the motors feel resistance, the device is programmed to reverse the direction of the door for safety reasons (e.g. if a person is trapped under the door) There is probably a setting that will dictate how far the garage should close before it stops. There should be a sensitivity adjustment located on the opener, depending on the model, which can be moved to a higher or lower position. Check the manual, or search for the manufacturers operating manual on-line for specific instructions on how to adjust.
Basically, there are two main safety mechanisms at work here:Safety Sensors - installed on both sides of the door about 2 inches from the ground and connected to the opener, these sensors send a signal to the opener to reverse the door in case they detect that something is blocking their path.Reverse mechanism - This one relates to the opener’s limit. The lower limit is set to the height of the floor. If the door encounters any sort of resistance during closing before it hits the floor (the lower limit the opener is set for), it should reverse.
