Harrisburg, PA is located in Pennsylvania's Great Valley, often known as the Cumberland Valley. Just north of the City begins the chain of Appalachian Mountains that form the Ridge and Valley Province of Pennsylvania. Blue Mountain, the first ridge in the Appalachian Chain, forms the northern enclosure of the Valley, while the Triassic Era hills of northern York County and Southern Dauphin County form the southern enclosure of this Valley. Harrisburg sits on the banks of the Susquehanna River, the largest river flowing to the Atlantic Ocean from the east coast of the U.S. The Susquehanna flows through a large water gap in Blue Mountain and continues south past Harrisburg on its way to Chesapeake Bay at Havre de Grace, Maryland, some 50 to 60 river miles downstream. The River is nearly a mile wide at Harrisburg and gives the City a beautiful river front area.
